API SN PLUS
The API SN Plus specification was created to quickly combat issues that come with newer TGDI engines and Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) concerns. This new category is fully backwards compatible with API SN, because the “Plus” adds additional testing for the LSPI problem. This specification was released May 1, 2018 to allow more time for the International Lubricants Specifications Advisory Committee (ILSAC) to finalize testing for the new GF-6A and GF-6B categories.
WHAT IS LOW-SPEED PRE-IGNITION (LSPI)?
LSPI is an event that happens in the combustion chamber of TGDI engines at low speeds and high loads. The fuel/air mixture spontaneously combusts prematurely before spark timing, causing a “super-knock” in the combustion cylinder. If left unchecked, this event can cause damage to engine parts, and potentially catastrophic engine failure in severe cases. Since 25% of new cars in the United States have TGDI engines, it was an issue that needed to be addressed.
HOW CAN LSPI PROBLEMS BE SOLVED?
Unfortunately there is not one root cause of LSPI, but research indicates that the lubricants used can play a role in combatting this issue. Calcium containing additives are strongly associated with LSPI, therefore a fundamental change in additive technology can mitigate LSPI. API SN Plus is only the first step in this battle with LSPI, with more formulary changes to be addressed with the upcoming ILSAC GF-6A and GF-6B categories.
